Inspiration

Sue’s Views
I feel like I’ve known the Queen all my life! Today would have been my parents 69th wedding anniversary. They were married the same week as Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation ….. and were given several wedding gifts commemorating the event. I especially remember a beautiful blue leather Bible with the Queen’s crest on the cover. As a child ….. my parents took me to ‘see the Queen’ at various events like the Changing of the Guard and the Trooping of the Colour. All very exciting for a little girl! It was like stepping into a magical world of wonder! Of course ….. all these years later ….. I’m aware of the fact that she ….. like any other mother ….. has had more than her share of heartache and shame. In many ways ….. that makes me all the more filled with admiration. She has not only been a figure head ….. but also a wonderful example of faith in the God she so openly shares at every opportunity. To me ….. she is a true leader! And an inspiration! I heard her say in her recent documentary that the word ‘inspire’ has two meanings. 1. To encourage someone to do something great. 2. To breathe in. I wonder how many times she has had to take in a deep breath over the years! But it’s wonderful advice to us all. When you are faced with a challenge ….. bad news ….. something beyond your ability ….. stop and take a deep breath. And remember to invite God into the situation. He is the King of Kings ….. and He wants to be your King too! Congratulations Queen Elizabeth on your 70th Jublilee. May God continue to bless and guide you through the coming years!

Welcome!

We had a wee visitor on our front door step yesterday. I happened to see him through the window ….. and managed to take a picture ….. but when I came back a few minutes later ….. he was gone! I had gone to find out what hedgehogs like to eat ….. but maybe I scared him away! I wonder how often we ‘visit’ God and get to His doorstep ….. but when He opens the door ….. we scuttle off in fear ….. when all He wants is to spend time with us and give us something to eat. We might think we are not good enough ….. or He doesn’t have time for us. Don’t let guilt or fear or low self esteem stop you from spending time and entering into His house. He will welcome you ….. take care of you ….. and clean you up. You will leave a different person!
“Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me.” Matthew 11:28-39

Conception

Sue’s Views
The word ‘conception’ has two meanings ….. the formation of an idea or plan ….. and the moment you began to be formed in your mother’s womb. Both apply to each one of us. God planned every detail of our lives ….. gender ….. race ….. gifting ….. place of birth ….. time of birth ….. characteristics etc. Many have difficulty accepting who they are. That’s why it’s important to know you started in the heart of God. You are not a product of your parents choices or mistakes. You were lovingly and thoughtfully crafted by the Creator. You are a masterpiece! And so is everyone of God’s creations. Therefore ….. we need to treat everyone with the love and respect they deserve. There is no place for prejudice ….. supremacy ….. or low self esteem in God’s amazing family!

The One Thing

“Cold showers”, my husband said. “I saw this video, and apparently it’s really good for you! I’m going to start doing it twice a day”.

Sure enough, he did, convinced it was the new thing that would help solve some of his energy and sleep problems. I wasn’t so convinced! Instead, after watching a different video, I was convinced that I needed to start balancing my hormones by watching what I eat. Thyroid problems made me tired and so, being interested in natural medicine and old remedies, I started watching videos about what you should (and shouldn’t!) include in your diet, and when. Apparently carbs were the enemy, and so were a lot of other things I’d been eating! I bought a few of the recommended things like apple cider vinegar, and tried to cut out carbs. I felt excited and motivated! This was going to fix everything!

Then I decided that I also needed to read up on financial management, as I was starting a new job and also wanted to be better at teaching our kids about what to do with their pocket money. The guy in the book recommended sitting with your spouse together and discussing your finances over a meal of garlic bread and wine… “Oh no! Carbs! Doesn’t he know that eating both of those in the evening will cause inflammation, weight gain, and can lead to all sorts of health problems?” my brain blared… “how can I balance both finances and health when the finance guy is telling me to do what the doctor told me not to!”

…Ridiculous, right? But seriously… which came first? My brain seemed to be swirling in an anxious flurry. Suddenly, the carbs didn’t seem to matter… because now the priority was to get my kids’ financial management under control!

How many times have you watched a video and then said to yourself, “if only I could just start doing this one thing, I bet that would change everything”…

Anxiety over how to prioritise things in our life only seems to be worse in this digital age. Scrolling through digital media, we are constantly being told what is “the most important thing that you need to be doing right now”. Whether it’s changing your parenting, your health, your finances, the environment, your brain chemistry, growing your own food, community involvement, or your kids’ future in this crazy world… everything seems to have a Ted talk trying to tell us that “if you do nothing else, do this right…” How do we choose? What comes first? What IS the most important thing we need to do, when there seem to be so many choices and so little time and energy to pursue them all?

Luke 10:38-42: “As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Martha was also anxious about priorities. At that moment, she believed it was meeting others’ needs… making sure everyone was fed, the meal was cleaned up, everyone was comfortable and had what they needed, especially this important and beloved teacher! And how dare her sister not also think that was the priority! Mary was just… sitting there, at Jesus’s feet?

But Jesus told her what the “one thing” was, the one thing that she needed in that moment, in that space… the one thing that took priority over serving, meeting needs, and having everything in order, the thing her sister had found.

It was Him.

Is parenting important? Yes. Is health important? Yes. Is serving others important? Yes. Is work important? Yes. Is being prepared for a food shortage important? I would say, yes.

But what always takes priority? Him. Sitting at His feet, listening to Him, spending time with Him. And then, in His wonderful way of being a loving Father that knows our needs, He makes all the other things fall into place as well.

Matthew 6:31-33 “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the gentiles run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Winter

Sue’s Views
It’s officially winter! The trees have shed their leaves ….. the sun goes down by 5 ….. and heaters are firing up! In nature ….. today is the beginning of its most productive season. New life is starting to surge through those naked branches. The beauty of spring doesn’t just happen overnight. It takes months of preparation and chemical changes ….. but they all take place within and are unseen. It’s the same with us! Our most productive seasons become evident after a ‘winter’ experience. Those sleepless nights of anguish ….. those prayers that seem to hit the ceiling ….. those hopes that appear to have been dashed ….. those disappointments ….. are developing strength and character in you that could come no other way.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4

Seeds of Wisdom

Sue’s Views
No matter what stage you are at in life ….. you have an important part to play. The sunflower is a great illustration. We all love the beauty and freshness of the young bright yellow flowers! They bring joy and vitality just being around them. But their most productive season is when they age! They don’t look so good ….. and they can no longer lift their heads to the sun ….. but this is the time they have the most to give. This is when they are harvested for their seeds and oil which live on to be used for many other products. The glorious seeds of lessons learned from experience and time can be of benefit when shared with others. You may not have the energy you once had ….. but the treasures within you are priceless!

Our Helmsman

Sue’s Views
55 years ago ….. my family left the UK to come to New Zealand by ship. I remember the first week was very rough. I didn’t want to leave the cabin ….. but my Dad who was a seasoned sailor ….. made me go up on deck. He said it was the best place to be in rough seas. And he was right! Our journey took us through the English Channel ….. into the Atlantic Ocean ….. navigating the Panama Canal ….. and out into the calmer Pacific. At one point we were taken to the place where the helmsman steered the ship. I couldn’t believe how small that wheel was! And yet it guided us through rough seas ….. landed us at ports along the way ….. guided us through the Panama Canal with little room either side ….. until we arrived at Wellington Docks. Life is like that journey. Aren’t you glad we have a Helmsman who knows the seas ….. the weather ….. and the way! You can relax and know He will get you safely to your destination!

Remover of Mountains

Sue’s Views
It’s good to be home after our whirlwind tour of the upper South Island! As Dorothy said ….. ‘There’s no place like home!’ But it has definitely given us a greater appreciation for our country and the hardy folk who live in the South. We think we’ve been hard done by with our months of lockdown here in Auckland ….. but it has had a follow on effect throughout the country. On top of earthquakes ….. floods ….. and fires ….. the lack of tourists has been a huge blow. One thing I’ve noticed is the resilience of people who have lived through hardship. There’s something about brokenness that makes us stronger. Flying home over the mountain ranges reminded me that a few days ago ….. we were on a train looking up at those same mountains. They seemed imposing and impenetrable! We were glad someone had made a way through and around them. But looking down on them ….. they seem much less menacing ….. and even beautiful. Whatever mountain you are facing ….. Someone has gone before you to make a way through. From His perspective ….. they are nothing!
“Let every valley be lifted up,
And every mountain and hill be made low;
And let the rough ground become a plain,
And the rugged terrain a broad valley.” Isaiah 40:4

Homeward Bound

The final leg of our journey took us back to Christchurch. We awoke to a frosty morning and a fresh sprinkling of snow on the mountains. We stopped in Amberley to spend time with some old friends ….. and then on to Christchurch. We walked to the Botanic Gardens  but soon returned to the warmth of our room for the night. Thanks for coming on this trip with us! We have so enjoyed seeing this beautiful part of our country. But it’s time to return home ….. hopefully with a fresh appreciation and outlook. Love to all!

Reminiscing

Sue’s Views
Today started with an early morning walk to the beach across the road. We then visited the Kaikoura Museum which was awesome! Lots of information about the earthquake. We hear about these things on the news but It’s amazing to hear individual stories from people who lived through it. Also lots of reminiscing over days gone by. Our journey then took us to Hanmer Springs! What a beautiful place. The warm water was very welcome and very relaxing. A bit cold getting out ….. but we fixed that with a great Indian curry!
