When our children were little we used to teach them memory verses from the Bible. One that stands out for me is ‘Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord but those who deal truthfully are His delight’. Proverbs 12:22. That was quite a mouthful for a 4 year old so we would talk about what it means. We explained that the word ‘abomination’ means He hates it! Then we would talk about what it means to lie. Being able to quote scripture is good but so much better when we understand it and personalise it. I read the other day that someone heard their child say ‘It’s ok to lie as long as you don’t get caught!’ I guess that is often the way the world thinks. Driving along the motorway the other day we were ‘warned’ that there was a traffic cop ahead! Does that mean it’s ok to speed, or drive dangerously as long as you don’t get caught? No ….. God sees, hears and knows everything we do, say or think! Lying is so against God’s character because it destroys relationships ….. trust ….. and integrity. He gave us a special gift to protect us from temptation ….. our conscience! It helped Pinnochio stop lying. In the words of Jiminy Cricket, ‘ Always let your conscience be your guide!
